The Model of Care
GEM's evolving model of care was first born at The Mira in Truro in 1999, where the traditional institutional model of a long term care facility was transformed into that of a residential type where residents live in smaller neighbourhoods, facilitating the creation of bonds with each other as well as with staff through more direct care.
This 99 bed facility in Truro has 3 individual neighbourhoods of 33 residents, where the newer models of care which GEM is putting into their facilities currently under construction will have residents living in even smaller neighbourhoods of 12 - 14 rooms, each with their own kitchen, dining, and living areas, just like at home. Even the nurses stations are built into the residential design!

The Design

SP Dumaresq Architects have designed a facility for GEM which will enhance individual resident's lifestyles, while maximizing the efficiency of the operations. All management offices, the main kitchen and the commercial laundry are located in the central core of the building with the neighbourhoods surrounding.
Each indivual neighbourhood has direct access to secure gardens and paved walking paths outside which connect to the neighbourhoods of their friends next door on sunny days.
