Long Term Care
Long-term care facilities licensed and funded by the Department of Health and Wellness provide services for people who need ongoing care; either on a long-term basis (permanent placement) or short-term basis (respite care).
There are two types of long-term care facilities available, nursing homes and residential care facilities. For more than 30 years GEM has provided high quality level 2 nursing care to those who require assistance or supervision performing their activities of daily living. Through a combination of model of care and facility design, GEM strives to ensure that each individual client is able to live a comfortable, established and stress-free lifestyle; one which promotes independence in their day to day activities and how they prefer to spend their time. GEM introduced their new design of a long term care facility with the construction of The Mira in 1995; one which moved clients from the traditional style of a nursing home to a more residential style home where they live in smaller sections of the facility referred to as neighbourhoods. Neighbourhoods consist of dedicated staff who care for clients in private or semi private rooms which have access to their own kitchen, living and dining areas, spa rooms and entertainment areas. Clients have become less dependent on mobility aides and staff is better able to form relationships with them. GEM realizes that those who provide care on the front line, from administering medication to ensuring individual interests and concerns are attended to, are both the face and the foundation of our operations. At GEM we make it part of our business to recognize what they do and motivate them to provide a stress free living environment to the residents. Each of GEM's level 2 nursing care facilities are licensed by the provincial government and all admissions are gained through their single entry system.
